Make Up In Motion Evaluation

During this project I have learned many new skills and techniques that I know will be invaluable to me in the future, and have been so enjoyable to create and practise. It has also been interesting for me to learn the importance of continuity, as well discovering how hard it is, and the importance of taking detailed notes and many different images of the stages and process in creating a look. I also enjoyed reading the book 'Great Expectations', I had never previously read it and am now pleased that I have as it is a famous and well publicised book. The detail in it was also very inspiring. In the 'Claudia and Mrs Laderman' unit I enjoyed having my own freedom and being able to develop my characters how I wanted. The main elements that I struggled with in this unit were, firstly, making the dry lips on my Miss Havisham look the same, which I overcame by taking many images of the lip I created in the first assessment, as well as making many notes and constantly referring to them in the continuity assessment. Secondly I also had difficulties with my character Claudia, as my model struggled to apply the white contact lenses. There was very little I could do to overcome this, but I tried to angle many of the images, to make it as effective as possible. I found working to the Great Expectations brief enjoyable but struggled with the second unit as I had problems with my creativity.

Evaluation Of Claudia And Mrs Laderman Unit


I enjoyed this unit as it was interesting to be able to create my own characters and be more free with my designs of make up, styling and hair. I am happy with the designs that I created but believe that they could have been far better and more exciting. I also enjoyed researching horror TV series, as I had previously not watched them. I had my initial idea, which I was pleased with, and thought was exciting, but was unable to use it as it was before we were informed that we had to focus on a TV series. This threw both my ideas and me, and after that struggled with ideas. Once I came up with my ideas my biggest issue was with my model who was unable to apply and wear both contact lenses. I initially wanted the contact lenses to act as though my character Claudia was being brainwashed by character Mrs Laderman. This was overcome on the day of the shoot when, luckily, my model was able to apply one lense. After one was applied my model was unable to see out of one eye, making it difficult for her to apply the other. It was difficult to overcome this but I do not believe that it took away much from the overall effect. There were no other major problems with my characters; my main problem was struggling with ideas. I found working to this brief difficult as, maybe foolishly,  I began working on my ideas before the brief was finalized. 

Practising Ageing Make Up

I decided that I would practise the ageing make up techniques that we learnt in a lesson at the beginning of this unit. I thought it would be important to familiarise myself with the skills that I learnt so that I felt more confident with the process of ageing somebody. I am pleased with the way that the look turned out and I think that the ageing was successful.

Creating Claudia

This week I created my character Claudia. I think that overall my portrayal of what I wanted to achieve was successful. I think that the make up went well and I think that I captured the youth and glamour that I wanted to achieve. I liked the way that the make up turned out and think that it looked dewy, fresh and flawless. I also liked the eye make up although it does not completely follow my face chart but I think that it still worked well. I was worried that the make up was too simple and would not have enough impact but, on completion, was successful and I think that the use of the contact lens raised it up to  a new level. I think that the styling was successful. I was keen to make Claudia look as though she was a student studying to become a witch. I think that it also suits well with the outfits that I took inspiration from and some of the glamour that I was trying to portray from 'American Horror Story, Coven'. I also think that the veil worked well, I was worried before that the veil would be too dark, but after I bought it I was worried that it would be too clear and not have enough impact. I however think that the use of the veil was successful and thought that it added a new element into the whole look. I deliberately kept the hair simple as I wanted it to be a sleek and natural look. I was tempted to use hair extensions but  decided not to as my Mrs Laderman model has very short hair and I wanted them to work well and be in balance with each other.

In terms of things that did not go according to my design or things that I would improve on, I had intended to use contact lenses in both of the eyes, however my model struggled in applying them. Also once the first one was applied my model could not see through it which meant that she could not see to put the other lens in. I think that it would have made the modelling for the image very difficult as she would not be able to see how she looked, feel disorientated, as well as making the journey from the make up room to the studio very difficult, and I had been assured when buying the lenses my model would be able to see through them. However I do not think that it took away from the look too much as it still had the effect in one eye. It has been a good lesson to me that I should check exactly what I should expect from a product before purchasing it. After the practice I was worried that my model may not be able to apply them at all, so this was an improvement. With the veil I struggled to make the top section smooth; I had sewn it before the shoot to fit my model's head but had found it difficult to fit it to the top of the head. I think if I did it again I would have attached the fabric to a clip and made it more how you would a wedding veil. I also think that the posing could have been better as I had really struggled to imagine how I wanted her to pose as well as finding inspirational images. I think if I did it again I would make sure I spent more time in thinking of poses.

Overall I am happy with the way the look turned out and think that my Claudia would fit well into 'American Horror Story, Coven'. I am now looking forward to creating my Mrs Laderman and completing my characters and their story.









Creating Mrs Laderman

This week I created my Mrs Laderman character inspired by the 'American Horror Story, Coven'. I was pleased with the way that the look turned out and I think that I managed to convey my character the way that I wanted to. I wanted to make my character look strong and controlling. I think that I managed to achieve this through the use of the make up, posing and styling. I think that I followed my plans well and the face chart. Overall I liked the way that the make up turned out and think that it looked strong but flattering. I also liked the way that the hair turned out as I was previously concerned about how I would style the hair as it is so short. I also liked the styling. I was struggling to think of an outfit that would fit with my idea of a mentor who was strong and controlling. I considered using a female trouser suit along with a bow tie, but worried that this would be too cliche and masculine. I therefore decided to go for a simple white shirt and a black gown that was originally from a university graduation. This also made me think of how it could fit with the idea of Mrs Laderman being a teacher and mentor to Claudia.

In terms of things that I think I would have done differently or could have been done better I think the lips could have been improved. I think that the shape could have improved. I struggled with their shape  as I wanted to try to enlarge them to make the look more impactful. This therefore meant that the lips looked slightly messy, and due to the colour of the lipstick that I was using it was quite messy when trying to correct it. I also thought that the skin could have been improved. I struggled with my model as I had not previously worked on many models who had more mature skin. This therefore meant that the make up that I used started to look cakey as it settled into the fine lines on my model's skin, but this was not as bad as it was in the practise as I made sure that I moisturised more heavily and carefully. Fortunately this could not be seen in the final images.

Although there were things that I wished I could have improved upon I am pleased with the outcome of the shoot and enjoyed the freedom of being able to create a look and character that I wanted.












Review Of The Art Of Gothic Documentary 3

In this third episode of 'The Art Of Gothic' documentary, Andrew Graham- Dixon starts off once again by reminding us of the basics of the gothic, the desire to revive something that was dead, and a style of medieval architecture. He goes on to explain how the gothic grew and developed into many other forms such as art, literature and film. In this episode he discusses further how it is still affecting us even now.

He continues and begins the body of the episode by referring to, and researching, one of the most famous gothic characters, 'Dracula'. He starts off by saying that 'in the Gothic all roads lead to Dracula'. He visits a fictional cross roads in Essex, an area which novelist Bram Stoker knew well and in the story of Dracula named his Essex estate 'Carfax', and it is there that the story, 'moves to its conclusion'. He goes on to explain the storyline of Dracula further and explain how Dracula managed to 'enthral us all'. He says it is because he looks forwards and backwards; backwards to dungeons and haunted castles, but forwards as it has 'infused our culture' with novels and TV series. I found this interesting as I was familiar with the Dracula story but had never fully studied it, as well as enlightening me in how he still quite clearly influences our culture.

He also discusses a previous vampire story by the author Carl Marx, 'Das Capital', written thirty years before Dracula. In the story Marx used Gothic imagery but very cleverly created a modern storyline, with a real life vampire, Capital, 'which drains a drop of the workers' blood every second of the working day'. He focused the story on capitalism to show the power of the forces of production and labour. He presents capitalism as 'predatory and ghoulish'. I thought that this was really interesting as it is a very clever way of presenting the modern day issues in a gothic and concealed way.

He also talks of another gothic novel by Joseph Conrad, 'Heart Of Darkness'. It tells of a trader in African Ivory. 'The novel builds up a picture of the horrors bought upon Africa by Europeans along the banks of the Congo'. Graham- Dixon goes on to discuss that this story makes out the Europeans are all in it together and responsible, 'for the atrocities of empire'. I found this interesting as I thought that Conrad was clever in using humans and their errors as inspiration for his gothic novels.

I thought this was a good episode but I however did not enjoy it as much as the previous two. I did not think that the content was quite as interesting or fascinating and I also found it more confusing and did not quite comprehend or understand all that was being said.
